Anne Bokma is an award-winning Canadian journalist and the author of My Year of Living Spiritually: From Woo-Woo to Wonderful—One Woman's Secular Quest for a More Soulful Life, published by Douglas & McIntyre in Canada in October 2019 and in the U.S. in March 2020. The memoir documents the year she embarked on a quest to become a more spiritual person. In mid-life she had found herself addicted to busyness, drinking too much wine, hooked on social media, dreading the empty nest and experiencing challenges in her long-term marriage.
She set out on a whirlwind yearlong adventure to immerse herself in a wide variety of practices—including singing in choirs, dancing with witches, trying magic mushrooms, experimenting with solitude and learning to be more grateful—each of which proved to be illuminating in unexpected ways. The experience taught her to live more authentically and attentively in the world and allowed her to begin to experience the greater depth of meaning, connection, simplicity and joy that we all long for.
